Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community.
Equality Florida Background:
Equality Florida formed in 1997 as Governor Jeb Bush took office and Florida’s state government made a hard turn to the right. Our strong presence in the Capitol since our founding 24 years ago has allowed us to defeat or neutralize dozens of anti-LGBTQ bills since 1997. These bills included efforts to: overturn all local anti-discrimination policies, repeal all safe schools policies, expand Florida’s anti-gay adoption ban, and prohibit domestic partnership benefits and protections.
Through lobbying, grassroots organizing, education, and coalition building, we are changing Florida so that no one suffers harassment or discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
Rights Behind Bars works alongside incarcerated people to challenge the cruel and inhumane conditions of confinement through litigation and advocacy.
All Square is a nonprofit social enterprise that invests in those impacted by mass incarceration through an entrepreneurial fellowship, a craft grilled cheese restaurant, and forthcoming law firm & prison-to-law pipeline.
Our mission is to ensure that those impacted by the criminal justice system have the support and opportunities they warrant to flourish as leaders, business owners, and legal practitioners.
Chicago Books to Women in Prison is an all-volunteer group that distributes paperback books free of charge to incarcerated people nationwide, focusing on all women and trans/non-binary people. We are dedicated to offering the opportunity for self-empowerment, education and entertainment that reading provides.
Currently we send books to state prisons in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio, as well as all federal prisons. We do not send books to jails and other short-term facilities outside Chicago.
