As a mother, I am instinctively drawn to anything that will help create a bright and positive future for my children. And as the mother of a young daughter, an organization dedicated to empowering girls and young women is particularly dear to my heart, which is why I am so deeply honored to have been a part of the Lindsey Vonn Foundation since the very early stages. Lindsey launched the foundation with the purpose of creating a positive and constructive atmosphere for the community and future generations by empowering girls through all-girl programs designed to help them grow as athletes, learners, and individuals. But I had no idea how deeply this purpose would impact me, too.
We’ve now planned four events for the Lindsey Vonn Foundation, including the foundation’s launch in February of 2015, two evenings of empowerment with presentations by Rosalind Wiseman (the author of Queen Bees and Wannabes, which provided the inspiration for Tina Fey’s movie, Mean Girls), and the first Lindsey Vonn Foundation Summer Camp for Girls, produced in collaboration with ZGiRLS at the Vail Mountain School. In 2017, our goal is to continue to grow the foundation beyond Colorado’s borders. We have a number of camps and events in the works to connect with even more girls and help them recognize and reach for their limitless potential.
Watching Lindsey interact with some of her youngest fans – the girls this organization empowers to become leaders, protectors, advocates, fighters, and friends – is incredibly invigorating and has caused a powerful shift in our hearts. It’s not just about getting girls moving and giving them tools to help themselves: It’s about teaching them, then encouraging them to pass it on, and it has inspired us to pass it on, too. With the Lindsey Vonn Foundation leading the charge, I have no doubt that there’s a powerful, confident, caring, strong, and self-aware generation of young women coming our way.
