Rights Behind Bars works alongside incarcerated people to challenge the cruel and inhumane conditions of confinement through litigation and advocacy.
The Food Depository is part of a united community effort working to bring food, dignity and hope to our Cook County neighbors. We act as the hub for a network of more than 700 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other programs. These programs provide food where it’s most needed. We also address the root causes of hunger. Public benefits outreach and job training programs offer support for our neighbors to overcome poverty.
We are cat specialists! Over 99% of the animals we help are cats. In 2019, we took in 764 cats and 1 dog from nearly 20 different counties in Wisconsin (and a few from other states). Many are kittens found by Good Samaritans or by volunteers doing TNR (trap-neuter-release) of outdoor cats. Others are surrendered by owners, while a few are found strays that are not reclaimed. And whenever we can, we work with humane societies and rescue groups in Wisconsin to transfer their animals to us where they will have a better chance of being adopted. In 2019, we adopted out 694 cats and 1 dog. Angel’s Wish is considered “limited-admission” as we limit the number of animals we take in to the number we can care for and that will likely be adoptable. We are also considered “no-kill” or “adoption guarantee” as we humanely euthanize animals who are suffering with severe behavior and/or medical conditions, but never for space.
Chicago West Community Music Center was formed to provide high quality music instruction and community performances to reduce the music-related achievement gap between minority and non-minority students, and between economically disadvantaged students and their more advantaged peers.
Project Angel Heart was founded in 1991 to address a major challenge for Coloradans who are ill: getting the nutrition they need to get stronger, heal, and remain at home. Many are too sick to get to the grocery store or unable to cook for themselves. Others find they have to choose whether to buy food or medication to make ends meet.
That’s why Project Angel Heart prepares and delivers medically tailored meals to people living with severe illnesses. Each week, our professional chefs and registered dietitian prepare thousands of delicious meals, from scratch, and tailor them to meet the medical and dietary needs of those who are ill.
We provide financial assistance and emotional support while building community spaces for people who need abortions in Texas—unapologetically, with compassion and conviction. Through organizing and movement-building, we foster a positive culture around abortion, strengthen people power, and fight for reproductive justice in and with our communities.
Our work focuses on rescuing and rehoming dogs from overcrowded, high intake, low adoption shelters where there is otherwise little hope. We also work to solve the homeless pet population problem where it starts.
We partner with the shelters our rescue dogs come from and work to help them and the surrounding community.
If you support our work, this is what your love, energy and passion create and make possible.
This is the heartache. This is the joy. This is hope. This is A Light in the Darkness.
